Luc Amar
Technical Engineer
Luc AMAR holds a degree in mechanical engineering from ENSAM and a PhD in mechanical engineering from ISAE SUPAERO and Ecole Polytechnique Montréal.
He is currently a specialist in the field of power transmissions at the Technical Centre for the Mechanical Industry (Cetim, France), where he oversees the research and development of the mechanical power transmission business unit.
He is also an expert on the French standardization technical committee UNM05 and an expert for the French delegation to the International Standard Organization (ISO) technical committees TC60 GEARS and TC4 BEARINGS. Finally, he teaches gears at Polytech Sorbonne (Paris).
Chris Aylott
Senior Engineer
Christopher Aylott graduated from Newcastle University in June 1999 with a Master’s Degree in Materials Design and Engineering.
He joined Design Unit in August 1999 where he currently works as a senior engineer responsible for research and consultancy activities involving gear material characterisation, fatigue testing of gear materials and analysis of failed gearbox components on behalf of UK and international clients in the aerospace, automotive, defence, power generation and renewable energy sectors.
Hasan ÇavuÅŸ
Mechanical Engineer
Hasan ÇavuÅŸ is pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Bursa UludaÄŸ University.
He is currently undertaking a long-term internship at Karsan Automotive.
His research interests focus on the NVH field, as well as transmission error prediction for gearboxes in the assembly line section
Borut Cerne
CEO
Dr. Borut ÄŒerne is a co-founder and CEO at RD Motion. Having previously worked as a researcher at the University in Ljubljana, he has authored more than 30 scientific and technical papers in the fields of gear transmissions, plastic and composite gear design solid mechanics, polymers testing, and numerical analysis.
His research has mostly been focused on numerical modeling of engineering polymers, with focus on polymer power transmissions, along with testing and development of novel experimental methodologies for this type of applications.
As part of his work at RD Motion, he is mostly involved in R&D operations including test rig design, software development, data analysis, testing methodology and testing standard implementation.
Ben Cook
Director
Ben is an old friend of BGA, having worked with us during his time at AMRC where he led their gear manufacturing research and most notably the foundation and support of Boeing Sheffield, where they now make actuation transmissions for civil aircraft.
Ben also served a 4-year term on the Executive Council of the BGA. Ben took a step back from work after the birth of his triplet daughters in 2021, but is now back having founded Hard Drive Ltd, an engineering consultancy specialising in advanced manufacturing, particularly for gears, with significant emphasis on sustainable manufacturing.
His paper for Gears 2024 embodies these three specialisms.
Xavier Entwistle
Student Prize Winner
Assistant Research Engineer at Design Unit I have just started my first year of work at Design unit following my graduation at Newcastle University with a First-class MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering with Sustainable Transport Engineering.
My interest in Mechanical power transmission grew during my 3rd year dissertation, looking at 3D printing of a planetary gearbox, for which I won the BGA/IMechE student prize, and will be the subject of my presentation at Gears 2024
Michael Fish
Owner
Dr. Fish completed a PhD under Prof. Bob Munro at The University of Huddersfield. In 1998 his thesis “Transmission Errors In Precision Worm Gears” was published describing how a mathematical model was created to accurately simulate component manufacture and the contact/operating characteristics of the resulting gear pairs.
Dr. Fish was a Co-Founder of Dontyne Systems in 2006 with Dr. David Palmer. His position is Co-Director of Dontyne Systems responsible for running of the company and the overseeing of development of software products for gear design, analysis and manufacture including the Gear Production Suite which now has over 150 active installations in 16 countries with 70% of turnover as export.
He founded Dontyne Gears in 2014 as a prototyping and testing centre to carry out project work with clients and investigate new design and production techniques.
He has worked on ISO committees and UK working groups for many years, and was elected to the board of the British Gear Association in 2016.
Caio Gomes
PHD Student
Caio Gomes holds the degrees of Mechanical Engineering (2020) and Master of Science (2023) at the Aeronautics Institute of Technology (ITA).
He is currently a Research Assistant and PhD Student at ITA's Competence Center in Manufacturing (CCM-ITA) and a Gear Innovation Group (GIE) member.
His work revolves around the influence of manufacturing processes on the operational behavior, with a focus on the induced surface integrity state and its correlations with gear failures."
Barry James
Senior Technical Leader
Barry James holds the degrees of MA (1991) and MEng (1992) from Cambridge University. He started his career at Ricardo and has been working on transmission engineering since 1993. Most of this time has been at Romax, which was acquired by Hexagon in 2020.
During this time he has developed, applied and presented on methods covering gearbox NVH, structural flexibility, gear design for high efficiency and e-NVH and Digital Twins. He is the inventor of 10 patents in transmission engineering covering design for efficiency and structural deflection, and simulation of NVH, efficiency, deflections and thermal.
Bahadir Karba
Technical Lead
After gaining information about gear engineering field bachelor’s and master degree based activities at Gaziantep University.
His experiences on powertrain and transmission systems at academic level stimulated a wish to continue work on field at also professional level. His M.Sc. Research Project: Developing A Software for Proper Assembly of Planetary Gearbox Components with Low Backlash.
His level is Gearbox Product Technical Leader at Valeo Company. Currently, he is pursuing Phd level pertinent studies at UludaÄŸ University. His main career goals are being a specialist engineer about Drivetrain also he would like to contribute to engineering science with doing academic studies. PhD Thesis Proposal is "Tribological investigation of IPE on Cryogenic Conditions for Gear Bearing Drive "
He is the graduate student member of ASME, STLE, IAENG, CSME, VDI. He is performing several duties like Topic Organizer , Peer-reviewer voluntarily in journals , conferences.

Sascha Rommel
Research Associate
Sascha Rommel, M.Sc. is Research Associate at Gear Research Center (FZG) of Technical University Munich (TUM).
He studied mechanical engineering at Technical University of Munich with specialization in material and drivetrain technology. After graduation in 2021 he started as Research Associate at FZG.
Since 2024 he is Team Leader for Materials and Heat Treatment in the Load Carrying Capacity of Cylindrical Gears Department at FZG. Sascha Rommel specializes in the failure type tooth flank fracture at spur gears.
A special focus of his research is the influence of the degree of cleanliness, other properties such as the case hardening depth as well as the influence of overloads on the failure type tooth flank fracture.
Jarek Rosinski

After lecturing machine dynamics at the Institute of Mechanics and Vibroacoustics in Krakow, Jarek joined the Design Unit, National Gear Technology Centre at Newcastle University (UK). In 2006, after 18 years of service, Jarek left Newcastle University, to pursue wholly his company Transmission Dynamics (JR Dynamics Ltd), which he founded in 1996.

Transmission Dynamics has grown organically, employing ca. 70 staff, including electronic, mechanical, software engineers and data analysts, without external investment and it maintains status of entirely privately funded company. The Company is actively investing in IoT, ML, AI and wireless sensor networks.

He is a renowned consultant in the field of instrumentation, machine dynamics and power transmission systems, providing support for blue-chip companies around the globe
Felipe de Sá Carneiro
Research Assistant
Master's student and research assistant at the Manufacturing Competence Center (CCM) of the Technological Institute of Aeronautics (ITA), focusing on industrial research in additive manufacturing through finite element modeling and simulation.
Member of the Gear Innovation Group, which manages the Engrena ITA industrial alliance. Currently part of the Fraunhofer IPK Project Office for Advanced Manufacturing at ITA, facilitating joint RD&I opportunities between Brazil and Germany.​
Mert Vadar
Founder
Mert Vardar is a leading gearbox and transmission consultant and the Head of Transmission Development at TR Transmisyon Engineering Inc., specializing in high-precision gear systems for defense and aerospace. With a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering.
He has over 15 years of experience, notably contributing to projects like the first indigenous turbofan accessory gearbox and first utility helicopter transmission systems.
Mert excels in advanced simulation tools, holding several patents for innovative gearbox mechanisms. He’s a regular presenter at international conferences and an active British Gear Association member. With expertise in complex transmission layouts, his recent patent work, including the Orbicular Gear Mechanism, has been pivotal in advancing gearbox technology.
Matheus Viera
Engineer
Matheus Viera is a mechanical engineer and research assistance at the Competence Centre in Manufacturing (CCM) of the Aeronautics Institute of Technology (ITA).

Member of the Gear Innovation Group (GIE), Matheus is currently working on a master's degree. His studies focus on applying topology optimization in gears to improve Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) behavior

Damijan Zorko
Founder
Dr. Damijan Zorko is a Co-founder and Co-CEO at RD Motion. He studied Mechanical Engineering at University of Ljubljana, and received his Ph.D. in 2019.
Having 15 years of experience on gear transmissions, he was deeply involved in developing RD Motion’s modern test benches and testing methods for experimental research on gears. Working at RD Motion he has been collaborating with world leading companies from several different industry sectors such as automotive, aerospace, materials, e-mobility, appliances, and chemical.
He has authored more than more than 50 scientific and technical papers, published in elite scientific journals as well as held lectures at top conferences hosted by Engineering Associations ASME, VDI, and JSME.
