TAD – CMM Gear Measurement.

£0.00

The BGA “Technical Awareness Days” (TAD) are a BGA collaboration with commercial suppliers of equipment, services and technology to showcase the latest product and industry developments. These 1-day events concentrate on a specific area of Gear Technology from both a technical and commercial standpoint.

The Gear Measurement Technical Awareness Day is being held in conjunction with BGA Member Hexagon Metrology at their Telford site on Wednesday 23rd October 2019.

About BGA / Hexagon Gear Measurement TAD.

Traditionally, gear manufacturers used dedicated CNC gear measuring machines (GMMs) to measure their products. These were quick and accurate but limited in their capability for non-gear features and other geometries.  However, with today’s high-speed, high-accuracy CMMs (coordinate measuring machines) they may not be the only solution available to powertrain manufacturers and users.

High performance CMMs have been used for many years in national measurement institutes, including NIST, Y-12 and PTB to calibrate master gears and artefacts, therefore CMM measurement accuracy is not an issue.  The challenge is to get the balance between measurement speed, flexibility and performance right.

This BGA Technical Awareness Day, in collaboration with Hexagon Metrology, will show delegates:

  • Measurement of cylindrical gears; bevel gears; racks; internal gears and splines
  • Reverse engineering of unknown gears
  • Loading of multiple gears for ‘lights-out’ measurement
  • High-speed non-contact scanning
  • Definition of K-charts, crowning and micro-corrections
  • Probing requirements and strategies
  • Temperature effects on gear parameters
  • Gear measurement with and without rotary tables

Speakers will include:

Rob Frazer from the UK National Gear Metrology Lab at Newcastle University who will show how revisions to the gear tolerance standard ISO 1328-1:2013 were introduced to accommodate the use CMMs to measure gears.

Dipl.-Math. Heinz Roehr – Quindos software developer and member of numerous gear committees, including DIN, ISO, VDI and FVA, who will discuss the history of gear measurement on CMMs and the challenges and triumphs along the way.

Delegates will be able to see demonstrations of the following equipment:

  • Leitz PMM-XI and Reference Ultra-high Accuracy CMM and Gear Inspection Centres
  • Global-S high-speed CMM
  • Optical scanning using HP-O
  • SENMATION Intelligent Sensor Automation
  • Multisensor and optical measurement
  • Absolute Portable Measuring Arm

There will be plenty of time for questions and opportunities to network with colleagues and competitors.  Bring your own gear if you need measurement advice.

The TAD is free of charge to BGA members and Hexagon Metrology guests, but pre-registration is mandatory.  Please click below to register your place online or contact Lindsay or Kirsty at the BGA admin@bga.org.uk to book direct.
